“Pacing 's not going to get you anywhere, you do realize that, right?”

“Shut up, Josh.”

Maine laughed from where he lounged on his bunk, watching York walk back and forth across the length of their room. “I swear, you're the only one in this whole project who calls people by their real names, Richard.” The name made York stop pacing, if only for moment, to throw Maine a glare. “Oh, sure. Glare at the guy who's trying to help you.”

York sighed and rubbed at the back of his head. “You're being a real help, sitting there and reading while I try to figure out what the hell to do.”

“York. Man. You've been trying to figure this out for weeks now. It's six in the morning and you've been pacing since four. This isn't helping,” Maine said simply with a sympathetic look. “You just need to come straight out and say it.”

“I can't do that!”

Maine's normally carefree smile faded and he gave York a hard look. “This is because of Delta, isn't it?” The sheepish look on the other man's face was all the answer he needed. “Oh, for fuck's sake, York. You really think she's going to up and leave you for that? Even though she's been with you all this time after you've been implanted?”

“... it's a possibility,” York mumbled, sitting down on the edge of his bunk and donning an embarrassed expression.

“You idiot! You complete and total idiot!” Maine said loudly as he stood, completely fed up. “Tell me.”

“... what?”

“Tell me why I should believe that you, Mister Calm, Confident and Cocky, is suddenly getting cold feet. Tell me why you're so scared.”

York's jaw clenched as he glared up at Maine. “I'm not scared.”

“Bullshit.”

“Look,” York said, “It's not exactly normal to have two people living in your head! I wouldn't blame her for not wanting to deal with that.”

“Not wanting--” Maine cut himself off and stared in disbelief. “Are you even listening to yourself? This is Carolina we're talking about! You know, the chick with three people in her head. If anything she should be scared of you leaving!”

“I wouldn't do that!” York yelled as he jumped up from where he was sitting.

“Why?!”

“Because-- Because I'm in love with her! So fuck off, okay?!”

There was a pause at the two men glared at each other, noses almost touching. The tension between them was almost material it was so thick. And suddenly, Maine stepped back with a small smile. “There you go. Was that so hard?”

York's anger faded and dissolved quickly into confusion. “What?” In reply, Maine just walked towards the door and opened it, revealing a blank-faced Carolina standing behind it. “... Laura, I--” York couldn't find any words so he just left it there.

Carolina lowered her head and looked at the floor, her hair covering her face. As he watched her, York noticed her shoulders shaking ever so slightly and a stab of guilt hit him in the chest. “... You idiot.

“What?”

The next thing York knew, Carolina was slapping him.

“You idiot! Did you really think I'd leave you because of Delta?!” Her temper was coming out in full-force and it looked as if York had taken the full brunt of it. “You... complete and total... idiot,” she said, her voice trailing down into a whisper at the very end.

York looked at her then and noticed the slight sheen of tears in her eyes. “Laura...”

“No, Rick. Don't.” Her hands came up to grasp the sides of his face and she looked him in the eyes, her normally smiling face serious. “I love you. Both of you.”

York almost felt as if his heart would burst at those words and he couldn't help the small, soft smile that was spreading across his face. “I love you, too,” he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. “All of you.”

And then Carolina's arms were around his neck and she was clinging to him in a fierce hug. It wasn't the Hollywood kiss that usually came after a love confession, but it was more than enough for York in that moment.

… Well. He could have done without Maine smirking and mouthing 'You owe me.'

But other than that, it was a perfect moment.
