Title: Out of Egypt, Into the Great Laugh of Mankind, and I Shake the Dirt From My Sandals as I Run.
Rating: PG
Fandom: roleplay/star trek [tnz crack-verse]
Pairing: Gen, Holly Lanford
Summary: It's graduation day.
Warnings: None?
She looked out at the crowd, pride filling her up and with a smile that hurt her cheeks but wouldn't seem to leave. It was graduation day and she was leaving with honors and a command position already. She didn't know what it was yet, but apparently it was highly irregular, and the Captain of the ship she was to be stationed on had requested her specifically. Holly couldn't help but be excited. Already she was following in her mother's footsteps, doing things that everyone else was astonished by and doing them with her head held high.
Still... there was a little sadness that tinged her pride and sense of accomplishment. She wished dearly that her father was still alive to see this, to see his lovely girl graduate from the Academy and go on to great things. As she walked outside after the ceremonies and goodbyes and hugs and the cries of "I'll see you in space!" she stood just outside the shuttle that would take her to the starbase where her ship was stationed. Her smile dimmed just a bit and as a warm summer wind blew through her hair she whispered a "Thank you" up to those stars, and the parents that were now departed.
But even reminiscing about the times she had with her father couldn't dim the adrenaline that seemed to race through her veins. Seeing the ships was a magnificent sight and she was reminded of a story her father told, passed from her mother to him, about the first time she had seen her Enterprise. And as she looked out the window, Holly noted with excitement that the Enterprise-E was docked at the base.
With no small amount of trepidation she got off the shuttle and stood, head held high and heart thundering in her chest, for anyone that could give her information on where she was supposed to go. "Commander Lanford!" a familiar voice called out from behind her and Holly whirled around.
"Captain Picard, sir," she said, straightening her back.
The Captain gave a small sort of chuckle. "Come, Commander. You've been assigned to my ship."
Holly couldn't help her eyes from going wide and her jaw from dropping. "S-sir? Really?"
"Yes, Lanford. Really." There was an amused look on the Captain's face and Holly couldn't help the slight flush on embarrassment as they walked towards the ship. It was a bit of a walk but when they had gotten to the bridge and Captain Picard turned to her and said "Welcome to the Enterprise, Commander Lanford," she couldn't help the the large grin from overtaking her face. It felt right, and it felt like home.
And she had a feeling that her parents couldn't be more proud of their little girl.
